Ogni volta che mi accorgo di atteggiare le labbra al torvo, ogni volta che nell’anima scende come un novembre umido e piovigginoso, ogni volta che il malumore si fa tanto forte in me… allora dico che è tempo di mettermi in mare al più presto, questo è il mio surrogato della pistola e della pallottola.

Il “Moby Dick” di Melville. Un libro. Tutto il mare in un libro.
S’accende qualcosa ogni volta che lo si prende in mano, il libro, e allora poi si comincia a immaginare in grande, balene, velieri, oceani, via, le cose più esagerate.
Una piccola installazione, una piccola performance, per poco pubblico che assista a piccoli oggetti che evochino grandi cose.

Il Libro
“Un tentativo di balena” di Matteo Codignola (Adelphi – 2008) con le illustrazioni di Roberto Abbiati, racconta dettagliatamente le vicende dello spettacolo, con un prologo ed un divertente epilogo.
«Il presentatore più adatto per questo libro sarebbe l’impresario di un freak show, cioè uno di quei personaggi in cilindro e marsina che promettevano, a chi fosse entrato sotto la loro tenda, l’incontro con donne barbute, gemelli siamesi o vergini ottentotte» – si legge nella presentazione -. «L’impresario in effetti esiste, si chiama Roberto Abbiati, è attore e regista di se stesso, ma soprattutto costruisce bizzarre scenografie. Chi entra nella sua scatola, e possono farlo solo quindici spettatori alla volta, si troverà al cospetto di una specie di prodigio: la creatura più smisurata dell’immaginazione occidentale – Moby Dick – trasformata in modellino e protagonista di uno spettacolo in quindici minuti, che ne narra per intero la storia».
Il libro di Matteo Codignola rappresenta «un testo singolare, per un terzo divagazione su un virus che si propaga all’istante – l’attrazione per la miniatura, visiva o narrativa che sia –, per un terzo programma di una sala molto simile alla stiva del Pequod, e per lo spazio rimanente esplorazione di un mondo minuscolo, dove niente, né questo stesso piccolo libro, né la scatola che contiene, né il libro enorme che la scatola racchiude, sembra esistere a grandezza naturale: ma dove per la grandezza naturale, sorprendentemente, si finisce per non provare alcuna nostalgia».

Every time I realise that my lips are turning grim, every time that a damp and drizzly November descends on my soul, every time that my moods become so strong… then I say it is time to put to sea as soon as possible, this is my surrogate for the gun and the bullet.
The sea. What sea? The sound of the sea. What makes you think of the sound of the sea?
Melville’s ‘Moby Dick’. A book. The whole sea in a book.
Something lights up every time you pick it up, the book, and then you start imagining big, whales, sailing ships, oceans, away, the most exaggerated things.
A small installation, a small performance, for a small audience to witness small objects that evoke big things.

The book
“An Attempt at Whaling” by Matteo Codignola (Adelphi – 2008) with illustrations by Roberto Abbiati, details the events of the play, with a prologue and an amusing epilogue.
‘The most suitable presenter for this book would be the impresario of a freak show, i.e. one of those characters in top hat and tailcoat who promised, to those who entered under their tent, a meeting with bearded women, Siamese twins or Hottentot virgins’ – reads the presentation – “The impresario actually exists, his name is Roberto Abbiati, he is an actor and director of himself, but above all he builds bizarre sets. Those who enter his box, and only fifteen spectators can do so at a time, will find themselves in the presence of a kind of prodigy: the most outsized creature of the western imagination – Moby Dick – transformed into a model and the protagonist of a fifteen-minute show, which tells its entire story’.
Matteo Codignola’s book represents ‘a singular text, for one third a digression on a virus that spreads instantly – the attraction for the miniature, be it visual or narrative -, for one third a programme in a room very similar to the Pequod’s hold, and for the remaining space an exploration of a tiny world, where nothing, neither this small book itself, nor the box it contains, as if one were in the hold of a whaleboat. Everything here and not even the huge book that the box encloses, seems to exist life-size: but where for life-size, surprisingly, you end up feeling no nostalgia at all’.
